A battle-axe is a one-handed cutting weapon. It has exactly the ordinary mace's hit, damage and weight, but a different attack type and a higher base value. It is distinct from the two-handed great-axe.

Generation
Julie's sells the battle-axe fully identified, uncursed and +0 for 200 Au. It also appears through random treasure, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Its item level 2 affects random acceptance, while the shop's fixed stock has no character-level requirement.

Description
The normal selected attack is a cut with the Strength damage bonus. Cutting and striking share that bonus, so the battle-axe's type alone does not make it deal more combat damage than an equally enchanted mace. It can also lunge. Changing to the axe leaves the previously saved maneuver sequence in place.

The axe deals normal physical damage. It can be thrown and recovered under ordinary throwing rules, but a spare axe's printed 12 damage is not directly used as a separate projectile damage rating. It can tunnel through suitable walls; unlike a mace, its cutting type can trigger equipment damage during a tunneling mishap.

Strategy
A plain mace costs only 100 Au and matches the battle-axe's damage 12, hit +8 and weight 50. Both normal attack choices receive the same Strength damage bonus, while the mace is safer for tunneling. The battle-axe's higher value is not evidence of a hidden combat advantage.

A broad sword is another strong shop alternative: 180 Au buys the same damage, one more point of accuracy and ten less weight. Prefer a battle-axe when its actual enchantment, availability or acquisition cost makes it better than those alternatives. A free, identified enchanted axe can be an excellent main weapon even when the unenchanted shop comparison favors something else.

Before a damage-focused upgrade, compare the great-axe's higher burden and two-hand requirement as well as its 24 damage rating. The battle-axe preserves the ready hand and is half its weight; giving up those advantages is a practical choice, not an automatic progression.
