Boots of speed are boots that sustain haste while worn noncursed. They reduce the base action delay and increase available tactical maneuvers. Cursed boots of slowness clear existing haste and slow the wearer instead.

__TOC__

Generation
They are repeatable item-level-4 boots in random items and monster possessions, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Ordinary pairs start at +0 with the boot blessing roll and shuffled appearance. Equipping a noncursed pair fully identifies that pair and records the type as known; this does not make testing an unknown pair safe.

Haste and slow
Wearing a noncursed pair clears existing slow, then supplies sustained haste. Wearing a cursed pair instead clears existing haste and supplies sustained slow. Greater enchantment or blessing magnitude does not increase either effect. Removing the boots subtracts their contribution from the corresponding shared status; it does not restore the opposing status erased when they were equipped.

Effect !! Action delay !! Tactical maneuvers
Haste || Halves base delay before burden is added || Doubles the base available count before the eight-maneuver cap
Slow || Doubles base delay before burden is added || Halves the available count, with at least one maneuver
Integer truncation and the minimum delay matter, so haste is not a promise that every action takes exactly half as long. Mounting overrides the final ordinary delay to 3. The full calculation is in Defense and protection.

The ordinary slowing effect refuses to add slow while haste is positive, and a normal haste effect also clears slow. These are properties of those effect paths, not immunity to every direct status change: cursed boots explicitly erase haste before imposing their own slow.

Strategy
Speed boots are especially useful when more tactical maneuvers let you combine attacks with blocks or ripostes. Review the combat sequence after gaining haste so the additional capacity serves your intended actions. A light load also helps, because haste halves the base delay before the burden penalty is added.

Heroism boots instead add attribute-sized hit, damage and defense bonuses and halve delay after burden. They do not increase tactical maneuver count. With another source of heroism, speed boots can supply the complementary haste benefit; two haste sources do not double the haste multiplier again.

Identify and resolve curses before relying on a pair for escape. Cursed boots can remove a potion's existing haste immediately and then lock the equipment slot. Further enchanting a working pair does not make it faster.
