New page

A fire-trap component is a mound of powdered aluminum used to set a fire trap. Its consequences differ sharply depending on whether a monster or the player triggers it.

__TOC__

Generation
It can appear as item-level-0 random miscellaneous loot, pawn-shop stock, or an acquirement result. A successful disarm can recover an identified component from an intact fire trap, subject to the separate recovery check. Once a player's trigger converts it to fire terrain, that is no longer the same disarmable trap.

Setting and effect
An identified component activated on ordinary, effect-free floor sets a hidden trap and is consumed. An invalid square wastes it; unknown use on valid floor triggers an accident instead.

A triggering monster takes 5 × (D + 1) flame damage, with D the local difficulty. The player may dodge using Agility and level, otherwise taking zero through 5(D + 1) minus one flame damage; a mount is killed instead of the initial hit reaching the rider. Player activation turns the tile into persistent fire even when the initial blast was dodged. Monster activation does not perform that conversion.

Strategy
Check flame immunity before using the component offensively. Avoid crossing the placed trap yourself: the resulting fire can remain an obstacle after the initial blast. An unidentified powder pile is not a safe experiment merely because your Agility is high. Dispelling can remove an intact fire trap without recovering a component.
