A sewer rat is a small hostile monster that can transmit disease through its bites. It can swim and is hungry, giving you a food-based alternative to fighting it.

__TOC__

Generation
Sewer rats occur in ordinary random pools and are specifically selected by the sewer population routine. They have no ordinary starting possessions.

Disease and feeding
The rat makes two low attacks per sequence, each rolling 0–4 raw physical damage. Every successful hit has a 10% chance to add 1–2 disease counts unless you have infection immunity. Disease blocks natural HP recovery while it lasts. Poison immunity is not infection immunity; preventing the physical damage also does not cancel the subsequent disease check.

Each disease count expires at a periodic recovery update, normally every ten game minutes indoors. Hourly countryside updates also advance recovery by one count. Repeated infections can extend the wait for natural healing.

While it remains hungry, giving one non-cursed ordinary food item from an adjacent square removes hostility. Poisonous food instead inflicts 100 poison damage, enough to kill an ordinary 5 HP rat, and costs two alignment points. Either accepted food clears hunger. The rat has no innate immunity.

Remains
Half of normal deaths leave a dead sewer rat. It is not safe meat: attempting to eat it makes you vomit and reduces your food counter to at most 4. This corpse effect is distinct from the live rat's disease attack. It has no alchemical transformation.

Strategy
Its low HP makes a quick kill practical, but prolonged close combat can interrupt recovery through disease. Food may be worth spending when already injured or avoiding combat; it is not necessary to poison the food. Carry actual rations into the sewers instead of relying on rat corpses, and use infection protection when repeated encounters are likely. A non-cursed potion of curing can address disease after infection.
