[2]

Leaving and returning

Step onto a gate tile to leave. With movement confirmation enabled, you are asked before changing areas; declining keeps you in the city. There is no gate toll or opening-hour restriction. Traveling directly to the gates also triggers this exit interaction, so with confirmation disabled it can take you straight outside.

The outside destination is Rampart's world-map location, at column 27, row 19 when counted from zero. Ordinary entry from the countryside places you just inside the eastern gates. Returning upstairs from the sewers, leaving a residence or exiting the arena instead restores the corresponding city entrance, rather than sending you to the gates.

City guards occupy nearby posts. Their presence is part of Rampart's law enforcement, not an admission fee; a character who has alarmed them should not assume the gates are a safe gathering place.[3][4][5][6]

Strategy

Finish recovery, obtain portable food and equip your intended weapon before leaving. A paid meal and a carried ration serve different purposes once outside. The Explorers' Club offers the Return spell, which can bring a traveler back to Rampart's countryside location; it does not deliver them directly to a healer or shop.

Nearby hostiles or a restricted tile can prevent city travel without closing the physical gate. An escape by ordinary movement still depends on your mobility and the enemies along the route.
