The '''short sword''' is the Legion recruit's starting weapon. It offers a little more damage than a [[Draft:Club|club]] while being lighter and slightly more accurate. As a free part of the Legion's equipment package, it is useful without spending the induction payment on an immediate replacement.

__TOC__
Join the '''Legion of Destiny''' during the day with at least Strength 10 and Constitution 12, without Arena or Order membership. The reward includes a plain +0 short sword, soft leather armor, '''500 Au''', and one point each of Strength and Constitution. The recruiting message calls it a ''shortsword''; the item name is ''short sword''.

Julie's sells a fully identified, uncursed +0 copy for '''80 Au'''. Decide on your guild before buying: paying for one and then enlisting duplicates a weapon you were about to receive. Random finds can have different enchantments and may be cursed.

The normal cut adds extra Strength damage. At level 0 with Strength 16 and Dexterity 10, an unenchanted short sword has hit 12 and raw cut damage of 0-19, before critical hits, lunar effects and the target's defenses. A dagger's normal thrust in those conditions has hit 13 but raw damage of 0-11. The dagger can retain a saved cut, however, so weapon type alone does not settle the comparison.

A mace costs 100 Au and adds four weapon damage points over a short sword, at the cost of three hit points and twice the weight. That trade is attractive when you already connect reliably; the larger damage number is less useful against an opponent you keep missing. There is no need to spend your entire Legion payment to make the issued sword serviceable.

If you previously used a thrusting weapon, check '''F''': changing to the short sword leaves the old thrust in your sequence. Explicitly entering '''a c b c Return''' selects a cut and Center block. Avoid the broken '''!''' shortcut; [[Draft:Melee attacks|Melee attacks]] explains why.

Omega 0.90.4

A short sword is a one-handed cutting weapon in Omega. It can be used in melee or thrown, and is the starting weapon issued to recruits of the Legion of Destiny.[1]

Generation

Julie's armorer shop sells fully identified, uncursed +0 short swords for 80 Au. A Legion recruit receives a plain +0 short sword with soft leather armor and 500 Au. Joining requires Strength 10 and Constitution 12, a daytime visit, and neither Arena nor Order membership. The recruiting message calls the weapon a shortsword.

Apprentice ninjas normally start with a plain +0 short sword and drop their possessions on death. Short swords also occur as random weapons, whose enchantment and blessing can differ from the fixed shop, Legion and starting-monster copies.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

The arena apprentice bypasses normal starting equipment and carries the exit-opening item instead. Defeating that opponent does not provide its ordinary short sword.[10]

Description

The short sword's normal attack is a cut, which adds extra Strength damage. It can also be used to lunge. Changing weapons does not replace saved combat actions, so a short sword can retain a previously selected thrust; Melee attacks explains the choice and its consequences.

A thrown short sword uses the same ordinary throwing calculation as a dagger, club or spear. On ordinary ground it remains at its landing square after a hit or miss. Its own damage rating and enchantment do not independently enhance a throw made while a different weapon remains wielded.

It can also tunnel through suitable walls, although it receives no thrusting weapon's doubled damage contribution to the wall-breaking check. Some tunneling mishaps attempt to damage the sword.[11][12][13][14][15]

Strategy

The free Legion sword is a useful reason to enlist before shopping. It gives two more weapon damage points and one more hit point than a club, while weighing five less. Keep the induction payment available for armor choices and supplies rather than replacing the sword solely because it is starting equipment. The other opening packages are compared in Your first weapon.

A Strength-heavy character benefits from its normal cut. With Strength 16 and Dexterity 10 at level 0, a +0 short sword has hit 12 and raw cut damage 0-19 before critical hits, lunar effects and target defenses. A dagger using its normal thrust has hit 13 and raw damage 0-11 in the same conditions; retaining a saved cut lets the dagger reach 0-17 instead.

A 100 Au mace adds four weapon damage points over the short sword but loses three hit points and doubles the weight. It is a damage upgrade worth considering when you connect reliably, not an unconditional replacement. A spare short sword can be thrown, but a spare dagger weighs less and buys the same ordinary throwing damage while the same main weapon remains equipped.[16][12][13][14]
