An incubus or succubus is a hostile demon initially disguised as a satyr or nymph. Accepting its invitation drains experience levels; refusing avoids that immediate drain but still reveals the demon.[2]
Generation and disguise
These demons occur in ordinary random pools and the Volcano's special table. Ritual magic in a harem or boudoir can also summon either a genuine nymph/satyr or this demonic counterpart. They carry no ordinary possessions.[3]
Player preference determines the initial appearance: preference for men gives a red s named satyr, and preference for women gives a red n named nymph; other preferences allow either. The corpse name already distinguishes the underlying demon. They are hostile, can open doors and are immune to poison, fear and sleep.[4]
Invitation and revealed form
Level drain explains the invitation's direct loss and the recovery rules for retained experience; this differs from a protected undead touch.
Speaking to the creature, or allowing its adjacent special action, begins the invitation. Accepting directly drains one through three player levels; this does not use the negative-energy-immunity check for spirit melee. Refusing, or having no romantic preference, avoids that drain.[5]
All these responses reveal the demon. A satyr disguise becomes an incubus, I, while a nymph disguise becomes a succubus, S. It then has hostile dialogue and the demonic special action. Revealing batwings does not give this template actual flight.[6]
The revealed demon can attempt level-4 spellcasting, with eleven choices through fire bolt. Its identity suppresses the ordinary demon's fear branch. At 2–19 HP, a demonic special action reduces it to 1 HP and attempts two hostile lesser frost demon summons beside the player.[7]
It has no actual ordinary melee attacks or defensive actions, before or after revelation. Although revelation assigns spirit melee, its action sequence still contains no attack commands, so it does not acquire an ordinary life-draining touch in this version.[8]
Remains and strategy
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave a poisonous corpse. Eating it attempts to add 5–24 poison counts and gives no food. There is no alchemical transformation.[9]
Refusing the invitation avoids its direct level loss, but does not remove the revealed spellcaster. Physical or elemental damage can harm it, while poison and sleep are ineffective. Do not expect negative-energy protection to make accepting safe, and avoid leaving a wounded revealed demon time to summon help.
