A frost demon combines cold bursts, electrical melee damage and hostile spellcasting. Its poisonous heart can be converted into a summoning rod, whose blessing does not make the summoned creature friendly.[2]

Generation

Frost demons belong to ordinary random-monster pools and to dedicated encounter selections in the deep Astral Plane and HellWell Volcano. Wounded level-6 demons can summon them beside the player. An ordinary frost demon has no fixed item and zero to two random possessions.[3]

Abilities

The demon opens doors and attacks twice in melee, each hit dealing a raw 0–19 electricity damage despite its cold-themed message. Its ranged snowball really does deal cold damage: a raw 0–19 in the affected area. Ordinary ranged opportunities are at distances three or four; encounter-specific awareness can change this. It is immune to cold, poison, fear and sleep, but not electricity or fire.[4]

Its demon ability can frighten a player below level 19 or try a spell, subject to the fear check, line of sight and applicable protection. Spells require hostility and a failed resistance check. Its twelve approximately equally likely spell choices are listed in the shared repertoire: these include sleep, a fire bolt and destruction of one item from a randomly chosen inventory slot, as well as lower-level effects.[5]

At 2–24 HP, its special ability reduces it to 1 HP and attempts to summon two hostile lesser frost demons on free floor squares beside you. This is not limited to hostile parents or to one lifetime use: healing above 1 HP can permit another response. Food does not pacify an ordinary frost demon.[6]

Heart

Normal death drops carried items and has a 50% chance of leaving a frost demon's heart. Eating it causes poisoning. Ambrosia can buy it for 66 Au or charge 400 Au to convert the selected heart into one blessed +5 rod of summoning with 20 charges.[7]

The rod uses the same hostile summoning effect as the scroll of summoning, even when blessed. It chooses a random monster and needs an adjacent unoccupied floor square; you neither choose the creature nor receive a friendly ally.[8]

Strategy

Cold protection helps against snowballs, but electricity protection is needed for melee. Neither prevents the spell repertoire from damaging possessions. Breaking line of sight limits both spellcasting and ranged attacks; a quick finish avoids leaving the demon in its summoning range.

The heart is a sale or alchemy material, not safe food. Converting it solely to obtain combat support is a poor match for the rod's actual hostile effect; its twenty charges represent twenty opportunities to create another dangerous encounter, not twenty allies.
