A water elemental is a water-bound physical attacker. Its essence can become a twenty-charge healing staff, giving it a practical value beyond the immediate encounter.[2]
Generation
Water elementals belong to ordinary random-monster pools and dedicated selections in the sewers and on the Astral Plane of Water. They are initially hostile and carry no ordinary possessions.[3]
Combat and water
It makes two physical attacks, each with a raw 0–29 damage roll, and has two defenses. It has no ranged or special attack. It is immune to cold and sleep, but not physical damage, electricity, fire or poison.[4]
Its water-only movement prevents normal movement onto dry floor. This does not prevent it from attacking an adjacent player on shore, and it does not imply that every generation route places it in suitable water. It has no hungry or greedy pacification response.[5]
Essence
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave essence of water elemental. It is inedible. Ambrosias buys it for 66 Au or charges 400 Au to turn the selected essence into one blessed +6 staff of healing with 20 charges.[6]
The noncursed staff heals the player and clears blindness. Its +6 makes the healing call use strength seven; recovery can bring HP to seven above the ordinary maximum. It is not a targeted healing beam for other creatures.[7]
Strategy
Keep beyond adjacency when using a shoreline to separate you from it. Its lack of a ranged attack then limits its options, while cold and sleep are ineffective choices against it. Physical attacks work, but its defensive locations are chosen randomly; a low attack is not guaranteed to avoid a block.[8]
Preserving the essence provides a repeatable healing resource after conversion. The staff's twenty charges and blindness cure can justify retaining the lightweight remain even when you do not need immediate healing.
