A dragon is a flying, fire-breathing monster whose scales can be made into dragonscale armor. Ordinary dragons also have a stronger elite form in the Dragon's Lair, distinct from the Dragon Lord.[2]

Generation

Dragons occur in ordinary random pools, the Volcano's level-4–9 branch and fixed positions in the Dragon's Lair. Their separate depth-indexed Volcano entry is unreachable within its twenty levels. They begin hostile and carry zero through six random possessions, with no fixed item.[3]

Form HP Hit Physical and fire damage, each Special behavior
Ordinary 500 50 Raw 0–74 None
Elite lair dragon 500 100 Raw 0–149 Lair-wide retaliation, then extra fire bolts

The lair modifies hit and damage but retains ordinary health, immunities and random possessions.[4]

Fire and retaliation

A dragon makes four attacks and has two defenses. Each successful hit separately applies physical damage and fire damage, each subject to its own damage prevention. It also shoots fire bolts, with raw damage 0–74 in the ordinary form, at normal ranged distances three through nineteen. It is immune to fire, poison and sleep.[5]

When a hostile lair defender triggers the shared retaliation, every living creature still participating in that response becomes hostile and immediately fires a bolt with damage upper bound 100. The elite dragons then gain additional nearby fire-bolt special actions using their enhanced damage. The first response is not limited to whichever dragon the player is fighting.[6]

Dragons respond greedily to gifts worth at least 800 Au. That response takes priority over their hunger: an ordinary cheap food item does not pacify them. Pacifying one lair defender does not prevent another from triggering the group retaliation.[7]

Scales

Normal death has a 50% chance to leave inedible dragon scales. Ambrosias buys them for 333 Au or charges 2,000 Au to turn the selected stack into one blessed +8 suit of dragonscale armor. The Duke's later quest requires the finished armor, not the raw scales.[8]

Strategy

Fire immunity removes both the fire component of melee and fire-bolt damage, but leaves four physical attacks. Cold and electricity avoid the dragon's own listed immunities. Flight makes water an unreliable barrier, and a long sightline can permit repeated bolts.

Treat lair entry as a group encounter. The elite's unchanged HP conceals doubled accuracy and damage, while the first retaliation can involve several defenders at once. Preserve scales when the armor's fire protection or the Duke's quest is useful, allowing for the alchemical fee.
