A potion of object detection briefly displays the locations of objects lying on the current map. It helps locate loot, but does not identify the objects or show everything carried by creatures.[1]
Generation
This item-level-1 ordinary potion can be found in random loot, at the pawn shop, or through acquirement.[2][3][4][5]
Description
Noncursed drinking draws an object glyph for each map square with a ground-object list, using the first object in that list. The display is temporary and returns to the normal screen after acknowledgement. Multiple objects on one square are not separately enumerated. The display is not a durable map of item identities, values or blessings.
A cursed potion draws those glyphs at random map coordinates instead of the objects' actual positions. It still uses the ground objects as its input, so an empty level need not produce a useful distinguishing display. Curse strength, positive blessing and enchantment do not add a more detailed scan. Noncursed use records the potion type; cursed use does not.
The drawing follows the current screen's viewport, so a large map's offscreen areas are not automatically presented as a complete separate atlas.[6][7][8]
Strategy
The object detection spell gives the noncursed scan for an initial 3 mana and is taught on joining the Thieves' Guild. Once the spell is available, the potion can be reserved for occasions when mana or casting is unavailable.[9]
Use it when deciding which part of a level merits exploration or when looking for a dropped object. Supplement the glimpse with clairvoyance to investigate the route. A glyph behind a wall is not an assurance that reaching it is safe or that the item is worth taking.
Do not spend a blessing on an already noncursed bottle expecting better detail. Monster detection answers the separate question of where living creatures are; neither potion replaces full item identification. A possibly cursed scan should not be treated as trustworthy navigation.
