A coma beast is an invisible sleep attacker. Unlike a torpor beast, it attacks three times in melee and has a much greater chance of putting an unprotected player to sleep.[2]
Generation
Coma beasts belong to ordinary random-monster pools. Ordinary construction supplies no fixed item and zero through two random possessions. They are initially hostile and invisible.[3]
Sleep attacks
The beast opens doors and makes three physical attacks, each with a raw 0–29 damage roll, plus one defense. Every successful hit has an 80% chance to attempt sleep. If you lack sleep immunity and are not already asleep, this adds two through seventeen sleep counts. A count normally expires at each game-minute status check; while asleep you lose your ordinary actions. Further hits do not extend sleep through this routine.[4]
Damage and sleep are separate results of a successful hit: armor or displacement does not cancel the sleep check. The beast has no ranged or special attack, including no separate surprise action. It is itself sleep-immune, but has no other innate immunity or food-pacification response.[5]
Remains
Normal death drops possessions and has a 50% chance to leave a dead coma beast. Eating its ordinary remains adds four alertness counts, instead of food. Alertness normally loses one count at each ten-minute game-time status check and helps against surprise; it does not supply sleep immunity. The corpse has no alchemical transformation.[6]
Strategy
Use true sight to identify its position and sleep immunity to address its main disabling attack. These protections serve different purposes: seeing it does not stop sleep, and being alert does not confer sleep immunity. Its lack of elemental immunity allows attacks that do not require accepting repeated melee contact.
The corpse offers temporary alertness for later surprise-capable foes, but does not solve another coma-beast encounter's sleep threat.
