A king wyvern is a powerful, non-unique flying predator with three poisonous attacks. It is much tougher than an ordinary wyvern and is itself immune to poison.[2]
Generation
King wyverns belong to ordinary random-monster pools despite their royal name. The Dragon's Lair also places them at its fixed wyvern positions, using the ordinary form. An ordinary specimen has no fixed item and zero through three random possessions.[3]
Poison and gifts
It makes three physical attacks for a raw 0–49 damage each, with two defenses. Every successful hit has a 90% chance to add fifty poison counts unless the player is poison-immune. Poison normally consumes one count and deals three damage at each game-minute status check, and repeated applications accumulate. Armor or displacement preventing direct damage does not itself cancel the poisoning check.[4]
The king wyvern is immune to fire and poison, but not cold or sleep. It has no ranged or special attack. Its greedy response accepts a single gift worth at least 900 Au to remove hostility; it has no separate hungry feeding response.[5]
Sting
Normal death drops possessions and has a 50% chance to leave a king wyvern's sting. Unlike the ordinary wyvern's sting, this remain is inedible rather than poisonous food. Ambrosias buys it for 16 Au or charges 100 Au to turn the selected stack into one blessed +9 ring of poison resistance. The lower conversion price comes from this sting's lower listed value, not from a weaker ring. Wearing it supplies poison immunity and clears existing poisoning; +9 does not strengthen that immunity.[6]
Strategy
Poison immunity removes the accumulating poison threat but leaves three potentially large physical blows. Its 700 HP and fast interval make an unprepared melee exchange costly. Cold or applicable disabling effects avoid its fire-and-poison immunities; water does not contain a flying creature.
The inexpensive alchemical ring is useful after a kill, but its high enchantment should not be mistaken for stronger poison immunity than an ordinary noncursed ring provides.
