Azoth is a high-level potion whose result depends first on plus and then on BUC. A naturally generated copy is uncursed but has -1 plus, so drinking it immediately causes severe poisoning rather than granting cosmic power.
Generation and appearance
It is a common level-7 member of the random potion pool and receives a shuffled container appearance at game start. Naturally generated Azoth always retains its unusual -1 plus.
Data and mechanics
Each copy weighs 20, has fragility 5, a base value of 1,500 Au, and item level 7. A natural copy is uncursed with -1 plus. Its cursed identified name is mercury.
Effects and interactions
| Condition when drunk | Result |
|---|---|
| Any BUC, plus below 0 | Adds 25 poison units. |
| Any BUC, plus 0 | Halves current constitution. |
| Cursed or uncursed, plus above 0 | Halves current and maximum power, then drains 0 through 9 levels. |
| Blessed, plus above 0 | Grants cosmic power, unless excessive current strength causes a fatal overdose. |
The beneficial result kills the player if current strength already exceeds twice maximum strength. Otherwise it restores up to 100 HP, can leave HP up to 10 above maximum, clears blindness, removes poison and disease, uncurses equipped cursed items, fills current mana to three times its normal capacity, sets current strength to three times the old maximum, and raises maximum strength by one. Azoth never identifies itself merely by being drunk.
Blessing a natural copy changes it from uncursed/-1 to blessed/+2, preparing both properties in one action. Raising plus without also blessing it instead produces the power-halving and level-draining result.
Strategy
Never drink naturally generated Azoth unchanged. Verify that it is both blessed and positive-plus, and reduce current strength to no more than twice maximum before drinking to avoid instant overdose death. Blessing a natural copy prepares both properties at once; enchanting its plus alone merely replaces one dangerous outcome with another.
Trivial
The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable defines “azoth” as an alchemical name for mercury and as the universal remedy of Paracelsus. The potion mirrors both meanings through its true name, its cursed name mercury, and its extraordinary beneficial result.
