The High Priest of Set leads Set's priesthood. The initial holder is Kharst, a melee fighter carrying the Holy Symbol of Set, whose unidentified appearance is a Jet Scarab. Odin's Senior Priests need this symbol for their final promotion; Druids can also use it to become Archdruid.[1][2][3]
| Initial holder | Recorded level | Combat level | HP | Attack strength | Armor class | Base damage | Kill XP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kharst | 10 | 7 | 220 | 21 | 5 | 35 | 140 |
Encounters
The main Temple of the Black Hand lies southeast of Rampart, at world coordinates 45, 45. Kharst occupies the northwestern chamber behind the concealed passage north of the central altar. The temple initially accepts Set's followers peacefully; its initial inhabitants are hostile to outsiders.
Kharst can also be selected for a mansion, wilderness encounter or random historical-person summon. Mansion generation overrides the usual protection of a shared religion and starts the priest hostile. The shared encounter rules also explain why a main temple may lack its priest after the player has attained another high-priest office.
The initial Kharst has ordinary personal dialogue and no special combat spellcasting. Set's altar handles admission and promotion; talking to Kharst elsewhere does not provide those services. A successor's recorded behavior can change this combat profile.[4][5][6][7][8]
Succession and strategy
Set's Senior Priests take this office by returning to Set's altar with the Holy Symbol of Odin and a character level above the incumbent's recorded level. Against the initial record, that means level 11 or higher. The final promotion grants Hellfire, +5 current and maximum Power and an authorized Symbol of Set.
For Odin's followers, Kharst is a quest target rather than the person who promotes them. Theft can supply the symbol without a kill, although it shifts the thief one point toward Chaos. Keep enough positive alignment to pass Odin's advancement check afterward. Killing Kharst instead installs a new spellcasting holder and grants no priesthood.
Carry the stolen symbol back for the appropriate promotion. Identifying and invoking an unauthorized symbol is dangerous, even if its owner follows the same god as you.[9][10][11][12][13]
