The ordinary drinking command rejects it because its actual item class is artifact. Trying to quaff an unidentified artifact-shaped potion is therefore different from successfully consuming an ordinary potion. Do not follow that rejection by blindly activating it: Death shares the same broad appearance family.

Omega 0.90.4

The Potion of Life doubles maximum HP and sets current HP to that new maximum. Despite its name and potion-like appearance, it is an artifact and must be activated, not drunk with the ordinary quaff command.[1]

Generation

Life is an item-level-6 unique artifact in the general artifact-generation pool, rather than one of the eighteen ordinary potion types. Ordinary random monster treasure rejects artifacts, and the pawn shop's generated stock also excludes them. The ordinary-potion choice in acquirement cannot select it.

Its appearance is one of the twenty shuffled potion containers shared with ordinary potions and the Potion of Death. It is not identifiable from an invariant bottle description. The general random generation system records that a unique item has been generated and rejects subsequent ordinary attempts to generate it while that state remains set.[2][3][4]

Description

Use Activate, select the artifact option, and select Life from the accessible inventory. The effect sets maximum HP to twice its previous value, sets current HP to the same number, and consumes one Life. Blessing and enchantment do not multiply the benefit further. It does not independently cure poison, disease or blindness.

The ordinary drinking command rejects it because its actual item class is artifact. Trying to quaff an unidentified artifact-shaped potion is therefore different from successfully consuming an ordinary potion. Do not follow that rejection by blindly activating it: Death shares the same broad appearance family.[5][6]

Strategy

Identify Life before activating it. Its maximum-HP increase makes it more valuable than routine healing, and waiting until maximum HP has grown naturally produces a larger absolute increase. On the other hand, immediate use can provide a large survival margin when waiting is dangerous.

Use healing for ordinary injuries when preserving Life for later makes sense. If poison or disease is also present, arrange the appropriate cure separately; doubling HP does not remove the condition that caused the damage. Do not sacrifice a blessed acquirement scroll trying to choose Life from the ordinary potion list.
