A denebian slime devil is an initially invisible, disease-inflicting swimmer. Its slime has an alarming eating message, but that message does not actually inflict the threatened incurable death.[2]

Generation

Denebian slime devils belong to ordinary random-monster pools and the dedicated sewer selection. They carry no ordinary possessions.[3]

Disease and surprise

Disease explains the shared effects on recovery, infection protection and available cures.

Its single low attack deals a raw 0–14 physical damage. A successful hit has a 40% chance to attempt infection, adding one through eight disease counts unless you have infection immunity. Disease normally decreases at ten-minute game-time status checks and interferes with normal recovery. Poison immunity is not infection immunity.[4]

The slime devil starts invisible and can surprise you after combat has been attempted. Without true sight, the surprise reveals it; without alertness it also costs your next action. True sight prevents that surprise branch but does not itself clear the creature's invisible status. An attack need not have hit to establish the combat condition.[5]

It is immune to fire, electricity and poison, but not cold, sleep or infection. Safe food pacifies its hungry form. Poisonous food cannot hurt this poison-immune creature and consumes its feeding opportunity while leaving it hostile.[6]

Slime

Half of normal deaths leave denebian slime. Eating it produces threatening messages but no disease, death, attribute change or nutrition in this version. Ambrosias buys it for 6 Au or charges 40 Au to turn the selected stack into one blessed +4 potion of curing. The potion's disease cure is a separate result of conversion; it is not obtained by eating the slime.[7]

Strategy

True sight or alertness helps avoid losing an action to surprise, but infection protection is needed for the disease rider. Damage reduction and displacement do not cancel that rider after a successful hit. Its slow interval makes disengagement more practical than against fast invisible enemies, although water does not contain it.

The slime is more useful as a cheap curing-potion ingredient than as food. Its frightening message is not a reason to expect a hidden unavoidable death, but eating it still supplies no useful meal.
