Boots of heroism are boots that sustain heroism when worn noncursed, improving hit, damage, defense and action delay. They are distinct from boots of speed: heroism does not itself increase tactical maneuver count. Cursed pairs are called boots of cowardliness.[1]
Generation
They are repeatable item-level-6 boots found through random items and monster possessions, the pawn shop and acquirement. Ordinary new pairs are +0 with a random appearance and separate blessing roll. Their effect records the type as known when they are equipped.[2]
Heroism and cowardliness
The cursed boots' action restrictions and recovery options are covered in Fear; they are different from the level loss caused by a cursed heroism scroll.
While heroism is active, the following bonuses use current attributes, not their modifiers:[3]
| Statistic | Heroism contribution |
|---|---|
| Hit | +current Dexterity |
| Damage | +current Strength |
| Defense | +current Agility |
| Action delay | Halved after the burden penalty, before the final clamp and mounted override |
For example, current Strength, Dexterity and Agility of 15 each give +15 hit, +15 damage and +15 defense. The boots do not raise those attributes themselves or grant extra maximum HP. More enchantment and stronger positive blessing do not increase the bonus. An already active heroism effect is not multiplied by wearing the boots.[4]
Noncursed boots add a normally sustained heroism contribution. Removal subtracts that contribution from the shared status. Cursed equip instead clears all existing heroism, then adds sustained fear unless the wearer is fear-immune. Fear immunity prevents the new fear, but does not preserve the erased heroism. Removing or curing the boots does not refund a prior scroll's lost duration.[5]
Strategy
Heroism is a strong general combat benefit, particularly with high physical attributes. Its delay reduction applies after burden, so compare the actual displayed delay with speed boots under your current load. When mounted, the fixed delay override prevents that part of the benefit, while the combat-stat bonuses still apply.[6]
Choose speed when the additional tactical maneuvers are more useful, or supply haste separately to combine both statuses. A heroism scroll can supply the benefit while another kind of boots occupies the slot. More enchantment is not a route to stronger heroism.
Do not equip an unknown pair in the middle of a difficult fight: the cursed result can erase existing heroism even through fear immunity and then prevent normal removal. Full identification and an appropriate curse remedy are preparation, not restoration of an already erased buff.
