If alignment is already negative, the game applies the shift, prints a positive chaotic message, and grants `10 * abs(new alignment)` experience. At zero or positive alignment, it applies the same shift but prints inner turmoil and grants no experience. A zero random shift still grants experience to an already-chaotic player based on unchanged negative alignment.
If alignment is already chaotic (negative), drinking the potion gives experience equal to ten times the magnitude of the resulting alignment and prints a positive chaotic message. At neutral or lawful alignment, it still shifts toward Chaos but prints inner turmoil and grants no experience. An already-chaotic player gains experience even when the random shift is zero.

The potion of chaos shifts alignment toward Chaos. It awards experience only when the player was already on the chaotic side before drinking.

Generation and appearance

It is a common level-3 random potion with a shuffled container appearance. Random copies begin uncursed with a generated nonnegative plus.

Data and mechanics

Each copy weighs 20, has fragility 5, a base value of 100 Au, and item level 3. Plus and BUC do not change the result, and drinking it never identifies the potion.

Effects and interactions

BUC stateResult
BlessedShifts alignment 0 through 19 points toward Chaos.
UncursedShifts alignment 0 through 19 points toward Chaos.
CursedShifts alignment 0 through 19 points toward Chaos; same result as noncursed.

Strategy

Use it when moving toward Chaos is desired. Its experience return is much better after alignment is already negative, while drinking on the lawful or neutral side gives no XP. Do not spend resources changing BUC for this effect; every state is identical and none self-identifies.

Trivial

“Antinomy!” also appears as the cursed label of the quenching-thirst potion. No specific explanation of the shared label is known.
