The Temple of Destiny, called the Halls of Fate, is the blue-crystal main temple at (49, 59) in southeastern LOCUS. Besides the High Priest of Destiny, it contains the portal into the Challenge of Adeptness.[1]

Local map

The complete temple layout is 64 by 16. @ marks arrival at (32, 15); local coordinates are separate from its world entrance.

These are spoiler maps. Coordinates are (column, row), starting at zero. Letters and highlighted symbols are article keys for sites and initial placements, not a literal game screenshot or a promise that a creature remains there.

H marks the usual high-priest placement. Player succession can suppress that priest and reveal the passage; random encounter contents and initial hostility follow the shared temple rules.

[2]

Entry and interior

The world entrance lies in a pocket of the Sea of Chaos. Reaching its coordinates safely is separate from being admitted to Destiny's religion. Inside, arrival is at (32, 15), the altar at (32, 3), and the high priest at (6, 2), reached through the hidden passage at (30-31, 2).[3]

Destiny's followers receive a nonhostile initial population. Others do not. Humperdinck is the supplied first high priest, but the office's record can change. The local map and random population otherwise follow the shared temple rules.[4]

Altar and holy symbol

Destiny accepts a new lay devotee of any alignment at its altar. Its final priesthood promotion requires a qualified Senior Priest to obtain a Symbol of Destiny and pray at a Destiny altar. Unlike the four opposed faiths, this quest seeks the player's own religion's symbol; a peaceful theft can supply it without killing the incumbent.[5]

The city altar in the Rampart Pantheon offers the same religious service, but not this temple's challenge portal. Neither joining Destiny nor succeeding its priest completes the challenge.[6]

Challenge portal

The portal is at (32, 8) in the central hall, where other temples have ordinary floor. Approach it to receive an invitation to enter. The Oracle's advice compares current Strength, Constitution, Intelligence and Power with a combined total of 100; that is advice, not an admission requirement.[7]

Choice or condition Result
Enter as a Destiny follower No entry-vortex damage; HP and mana are restored before transfer into the challenge
Enter as anyone else First suffers 0-199 unstoppable damage; only a survivor then receives HP and mana restoration and enters
Decline at level 100 or below Remains in the temple without that refusal penalty
Decline above level 100 XP and level become zero; current and maximum HP become current Constitution, and mana is recalculated

The temple does not require a completed Oracle quest chain or an existing Adept rank to let you attempt entry. Entering is not completion: the challenge still lies beyond the portal. Do not expect its healing to rescue a character killed by the preceding vortex.[8]

Strategy and return

Consider the portal's choice before stepping onto it, particularly above level 100. Destiny worship avoids its entry damage, but changing religion has its own consequences and does not solve the challenge ahead. The high priest's conversation is unrelated to opening this portal.

To leave the temple itself, use the southern exits. They return to the countryside and discard the current temple; they do not describe an escape route from inside the challenge. Later visits rebuild the temple, subject to the high-priest suppression rule.[9]
