A deathstar is a flying fire-immune creature that can repeatedly burst into flame when injured and adjacent to the player. Its explosion is not a suicide attack, and its ordinary combat sequence contains no melee attack.[2]
Generation
Deathstars belong to ordinary random-monster pools, including the Volcano's level-4–9 branch. Their separate depth-indexed entry is unreachable within its twenty levels. They are initially hostile, carry no ordinary possessions and move randomly.[3]
Injured explosions
The deathstar has one defensive action and no melee or ranged attack. When its special action runs adjacent to the player while HP is positive but below its ordinary 500-HP maximum, it creates a fireball centered on itself. The burst rolls separately below its current HP for each affected target. A deathstar at 499 HP can therefore produce a raw 0–498 fire hit, while one at 10 HP produces 0–9.[4]
Its own fire immunity normally protects it from the burst, allowing later explosions. The ability does not require hostility, and a full-HP specimen does not qualify. The burst affects nearby creatures and makes affected monsters hostile.[5]
Safe food pacifies its hungry form but does not disable the injured-explosion condition. Poisonous food can injure it, leaves it hostile and uses up the feeding response. It is immune to fire, but not poison, cold, electricity or sleep.[6]
Eye
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave a deathstar's eye. It is poisonous food. Ambrosias buys it for 166 Au or charges 1,000 Au to turn the selected stack into one blessed +7 Firestar. The weapon's existing +7 is retained; the deathstar's level does not make the result +9.[7]
Strategy
Do not lightly wound a healthy deathstar while standing beside it without fire immunity: a small initial hit leaves a large explosion damage range. Attack from beyond adjacency or establish fire immunity before fighting close up. Feeding can stop ordinary hostility, but an injured peaceful deathstar still meets the burst condition.
The alchemical Firestar grants fire immunity while used, but that reward is obtained after the kill. The eye itself does not give the immunity when eaten.
