A lesser frost demon is a fast, hostile demon with very low HP, two melee attacks and a spell repertoire. Its cold-themed melee message is misleading: the damage is electrical in Omega 0.90.4.[2]
Generation
Lesser frost demons belong to ordinary random-monster pools and can be summoned by wounded level-4 or level-5 demons, including a frost demon. Ordinary construction gives no fixed item and zero or one random possession; demon summons are placed on free floor squares next to the player and made hostile.[3]
Abilities
The lesser demon opens doors and makes two melee attacks, each dealing a raw 0–14 electricity damage. It is immune to cold, poison, fear and sleep, but not electricity or fire. It has no ordinary ranged attack and does not accept food as a peace offering.[4]
Its demon ability can frighten a low-level player or attempt a spell. Fear requires line of sight, no existing fear and a successful level-dependent check; this fear branch cannot affect a player of level 19 or higher. Fear immunity prevents that result. Spellcasting additionally requires hostility and can be resisted. Its level gives it the first ten choices in the monster spell repertoire, including poison and sleep but not the stronger casters' fire bolt or item destruction.[5]
When its special ability runs at 2–14 HP, it reduces itself to 1 HP and attempts to summon two night gaunts next to you. Each needs a free floor square. This response does not require hostility and can happen again if the demon later heals above 1 HP.[6]
Heart
Normal death drops carried possessions and has a 50% chance of leaving a lesser frost demon's heart. The heart is inedible. Ambrosia charges 100 Au to turn it into a blessed +3 snowball stick with 20 charges, or buys it for 16 Au. The stick's cold burst deals a raw 0–19 damage; its +3 does not increase that burst. Conversion consumes the selected heart and produces one stick.[7]
Strategy
Finish its ordinary 15 HP promptly when possible: leaving it badly wounded can exchange one enemy for two nearby night gaunts. Electricity immunity protects against its misleadingly named melee attack, whereas cold immunity does not. Sleep and fear attacks cannot disable it, and cold attacks cannot damage it.
The heart offers a comparatively inexpensive reusable cold attack, but not a solution to other frost demons, which are cold-immune. Keep the area burst's danger to nearby creatures and yourself in mind.
