The potion of alertness grants temporary alertness for searching and resisting invisible surprise. Its cursed name is potion of sleep, but drinking a cursed copy actually does nothing.
Generation and appearance
It is a common level-0 random potion with a shuffled container appearance. Tse-tse flies and torpor beasts begin with fixed copies. Random copies begin uncursed with a generated nonnegative plus.
Data and mechanics
Each copy weighs 20, has fragility 5, a base value of 100 Au, and item level 0. Plus does not affect duration.
Effects and interactions
| BUC state | Result |
|---|---|
| Blessed | Adds 9 alertness units and identifies itself. |
| Uncursed | Adds 4 alertness units and identifies itself. |
| Cursed | No effect and no identification. |
While alert, every valid search succeeds instead of using the usual two-in-three chance. Invisible hostile monsters also fail to inflict their normal surprise delay. Alertness decays in ten-minute units.
Strategy
Use it before searching a trap-heavy or secret-rich area or approaching an invisible ambusher. Blessing more than doubles the duration. Once a cursed copy is known, discard or sell it; despite the “sleep” name, it neither helps nor harms the drinker.
Trivial
The cursed name “potion of sleep” suggests an effect that the player never experiences in 0.90.4; no explanation of the mismatch is known.
