A potion of breathing supplies temporary magical breathing, allowing the player to survive water that would otherwise force a drowning emergency.[1]
Generation
It is an item-level-2 ordinary potion, obtainable from random loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement.[2][3][4][5]
Description
A noncursed potion adds 6 + B breathing units, where B is blessing strength. These normally decrease at ten-minute status updates. Enchantment does not affect the duration. While breathing is positive, the ordinary drowning routine accepts it as protection without requiring the player to remove armor or reduce carried weight.
A cursed potion instead inflicts 50 unstoppable damage described as choking. Existing magical breathing does not divert this direct damage into the ordinary safe drowning branch. The amount is fixed, not scaled by curse strength or enchantment. Noncursed drinking identifies the type; cursed drinking does not.[6][7][8]
Strategy
Drink a known safe bottle before entering deep water, especially while armored or heavily loaded. Once the drowning emergency menu has opened, it offers dropping and bashing options rather than a general opportunity to drink any potion; preparation is preferable to relying on a late cure.
Levitation can avoid entering water through ordinary movement, whereas breathing protects after contact. The breathing spell or equipment with magical breathing provides alternatives. Plan enough duration to leave the water again, and avoid self-dispelling while submerged: negative dispelling can rapidly end temporary breathing.
