A fnord is a stationary, normally peaceful creature that can summon other monsters beside you. It has no melee attacks. Its antennae can increase intelligence when eaten or be made into a summoning scroll.[2]
Generation
Fnords belong to ordinary random-monster pools. They have no fixed item, and their ordinary treasure allowance produces no additional random possessions. No countryside terrain table specifically favors them.[3]
Summoning
A fnord cannot normally move and has an empty combat sequence. Once awake, its nearby special action is checked on half of its pulses. If adjacent, that action has a further one-third chance to attempt two summons. It does not require the fnord to be hostile.[4]
Each summon needs an unoccupied floor square next to the player. The creatures come from the ordinary pool appropriate to the current difficulty and retain their own initial attitude; they are not all forced hostile. Lack of space can prevent one or both from appearing. Sanctuary suppresses the special action.[5]
Antennae
Normal death has a 50% chance of leaving fnord's antennae. Eating them adds one point to current intelligence, without increasing maximum intelligence or providing food. Ambrosias transforms them into a blessed scroll of summoning for 100 Au, or buys one for 16 Au. Transformation consumes the selected stack and leaves one scroll.[6]
Strategy
Avoid waiting beside a fnord merely because it is peaceful. Step away to stop the adjacent summoning condition, or kill its fragile 1 HP body before a crowd forms. It has no innate immunity. Its antennae offer a choice between an immediate intelligence increase and a controlled consumable; they are not ordinary rations. Summon farming can introduce stronger or hostile creatures and has no guaranteed safe outcome.
