A nazgul is a flying undead spellcaster with three life-draining attacks. It carries a deeply cursed Demonblade and appears among the defenders of Magic Isle.[2]
Generation
Nazgul occur in ordinary random pools, the Volcano's special table and fixed Magic Isle positions. An ordinary specimen is hostile and carries a +8 Demonblade with blessing -8, without extra random possessions.[3]
Description
It makes three physical attacks for raw damage 0–19 each, with life drain of strength 7 on each successful hit, and has two defenses. Negative-energy immunity blocks the life drain; otherwise each application either lowers strength and constitution by seven or drains seven levels. Armor blocking direct damage does not itself cancel the rider.[4]
It is immune to cold, poison, fear and sleep. Despite spirit-like movement, it has neither intangibility nor physical-damage immunity. Its nearby level-7 spellcasting includes fourteen choices through disruption and requires hostility and sight; it has no separate ranged attack.[5]
Remains and strategy
Normal death drops its Demonblade and has a 50% chance to leave an inedible husk with no alchemical transformation.[6]
Negative-energy protection is valuable against three drain opportunities, but does not address the entire spell list. Physical damage, fire and electricity avoid its listed immunities. A mace of disruption is a relevant weapon against its spirit melee type; recovering a Demonblade should not be mistaken for obtaining an immediately safe replacement weapon.
