A cloak of negimmunity is a cloak that grants negative-energy immunity while worn noncursed. It is useful against life-draining undead such as spectres and vampire lords. A cursed copy is a cloak of level drain and immediately drains the wearer's levels when equipped.[1]
Generation
It is a repeatable item-level-3 cloak, available through random items and monster possessions, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Ordinary copies start at +0 with the cloak blessing roll and shuffled appearance.[2]
Ambrosias offers two alchemical sources. Both cost 400 Au and produce a blessed cloak; the remains themselves are not wearable cloaks, and ordinary kills do not guarantee remains.[3]
| Ingredient | Product |
|---|---|
| Spectre's veil | Blessed +5 cloak of negimmunity |
| Vampire dust | Blessed +9 cloak of negimmunity |
Protection and curse
Wearing a noncursed cloak adds one source of negative-energy immunity; removing it removes that contribution. This stops the life-drain routine's loss of Strength/Constitution or levels, but does not eliminate the separate ordinary damage of a spirit's melee attack. Extra enchantment and stronger positive blessing do not improve the immunity.[4]
The cloak does not protect mana from every draining power. For example, the Eater of Magic halves mana without consulting negative-energy immunity. Nor does this immunity block every direct level-loss effect.[5]
A cursed equip drains a number of levels equal to the curse's magnitude, with the associated maximum-HP loss, and can kill a sufficiently low-level wearer. That direct drain bypasses negative-energy immunity. The cursed cloak then blocks ordinary removal. Removing or uncursing it does not refund the lost levels; effects that remove and reapply its worn power can trigger the drain again.[6]
Strategy
Prepare the immunity before engaging life-draining enemies. A cloak made from their remains helps against later opponents, not the first fight that obtains the ingredient. Spectre remains provide an alternative to hunting the much stronger vampire lord; the Coliseum spectre is a potential source when you are ready for that fight.
For its main purpose, an uncursed +0 cloak is as effective as the +5 or +9 alchemical versions. The latter's extra pluses can buffer item damage, but are not a reason to fight a more dangerous monster solely for stronger immunity. Avoid identifying an unknown cloak by wearing it: a deep curse can inflict irreversible losses immediately.
