A ring of truesight supplies sustained true sight while worn noncursed, revealing invisible creatures within sight and defeating particular deceptions. Its cursed form, the ring of blindness, instead causes sustained blindness.[1]
Generation
It is an item-level-3 random ring, available in ordinary loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Its appearance is shuffled each game, and ordinary enchantment and blessing follow the ring generation rules.[2]
Ambrosias converts a shadow matrix into a blessed +8 ring for 150 Au. The +8 does not make its vision stronger than an ordinary noncursed ring's.[3]
Description
The noncursed ring adds 1500 true-sight counts, above the ordinary countdown range. It reveals the type when its power is applied. Neither enchantment nor the size of a positive blessing improves its vision.[4]
| Situation | Effect |
|---|---|
| Invisible creature within visible range | Reveals the creature and lets Examine describe its actual visible state |
| Surprise special action | Prevents that action's skipped-player-turn branch |
| Blackout spores | Prevents their blindness, but not their separate darkening of the area |
| Monster illusion | Restores the creature's true name and display symbol when the illusion action runs |
| Existing blindness or catoblepas gaze | Does not cure blindness or provide gaze immunity |
True sight is not full-map monster detection or an alternative source of light.[5]
A cursed copy adds 1500 blindness counts instead, even if another item supplies true sight. Removing the ring subtracts its corresponding contribution and clamps a negative remainder to zero. Because a cursed ring is stuck, its removal first requires resolving the ordinary curse restriction. Healing can clear blindness while it remains worn, but later reapplication of the ring's cursed effect blinds again.[6]
Strategy
A ring leaves the cloak slot free for negative-energy immunity or displacement, unlike the cloak providing the same vision. That combination is useful against invisible life-draining enemies such as vampire lords: seeing them is helpful but does not itself stop life drain.
Identify the curse state before wearing it. Do not invest further enchantment merely for better sight, and do not substitute true sight for gaze immunity when facing a catoblepas. A true-sight scroll supplies a temporary alternative when no ring slot is available.[7]
