The scroll of dispelling targets magical effects on the reader, a monster, or certain terrain. A cursed copy is identified as a scroll of self-dispelling and strips the reader's temporary beneficial statuses instead.
Generation and appearance
It is one of the 24 common random scroll types and uses the per-game shuffled inscription pool described at Scroll#Unidentified inscriptions. Randomly generated copies begin uncursed. No fixed carrier is defined for this scroll.
Data and mechanics
Each copy weighs 5, has fragility 1, a base value of 250 Au, and item level 3. Reading a noncursed copy gives it a hidden 0-through-2 strength bonus, so two otherwise identical scrolls may not dispel equally powerful magic.
Effects and interactions
| BUC state | Result |
|---|---|
| Blessed | Prompts for a target with effective strength 1 through 3. |
| Uncursed | Prompts for a target with effective strength 0 through 2. |
| Cursed | Offers no target; instead it brings most temporary beneficial effects to the verge of expiring. |
Targeting yourself can uncurse equipped items, provided the scroll is strong enough to overcome each item's curse. Targeting a sufficiently low-level monster strips its special and ranged abilities, reduces any special melee attack to an ordinary attack, removes its immunities, and ends invisibility or intangibility. A suitable terrain target can disable fire, waking-statue, teleport, or disintegration traps, or turn a magic pool into water.
A cursed scroll nearly expires temporary accuracy, displacement, haste, breathing, invisibility, regeneration, alertness, heroism, levitation, and true sight. Most end immediately; haste and regeneration can linger for one more move.
Strategy
For uncursing equipment, an uncursed scroll is unreliable because its strength varies; a blessed copy always has at least some dispelling power. Against monsters, the weakest roll cannot affect any positive-level target, and stronger monsters require a better roll. Choose the target before reading because cancelling after selecting the scroll still consumes it.
