A scroll of charging replenishes a selected wand, staff or other stick. It offers a way to restore charges without the target-enchantment explosion check of a scroll of enchantment.

Generation

It is an item-level-2 random scroll, also available through pawn-shop stock and acquirement.

Description

Reading prompts for a stick in the accessible inventory. An uncursed scroll adds 1–10 charges. At positive blessing strength B, it adds (B + 1) times one roll from 1 through 10, then caps the total at 99. For example, +1 blessing adds an even number from 2 to 20. The scroll's enchantment does not affect charging.

A cursed copy still lets the player choose the stick, but sets its charges to zero. The type becomes known automatically only for noncursed use, even though the charging message and target prompt can help the player infer a cursed copy's identity. Cancelling the target or having no suitable stick still spends the scroll.

Charging changes the charge count, not the stick's activated power, curse or enchantment. It cannot by itself repair a power stripped by disenchantment. A stick already above 99 charges is reduced to 99 by noncursed charging because the cap is applied after addition.

Strategy

Keep a scroll for a useful depleted combat or utility stick, and move that stick out of the backpack before reading. Blessing is worthwhile when the extra charges are valuable and will not mostly be lost to the 99-charge cap. There is no benefit in enchanting the charging scroll solely to increase its charge yield.

Compare it with enchantment when the target is still safe to improve: enchantment supplies both a plus increase and charges, while charging avoids that improvement's explosion risk. A cursed charging scroll is a controllable drain, rather than a random loss from your equipment, but usually has little positive value. Do not spend one expecting the broader repair performed by an enchantment effect on a disabled artifact.
