A scroll of self-knowledge reports the player's current condition, protections and standing. It is a diagnostic tool rather than an item-identification scroll.
Generation
It is an item-level-1 random scroll, with the pawn shop and acquirement as other sources.
Description
A noncursed reading displays point total and an alignment description, active statuses, immunities, and ranks with associated progress information. It also records the scroll type as known. Blessing and enchantment do not improve the report.
The display describes conditions rather than enumerating every remaining duration or numerical alignment value. It does not identify possessions, teach spells, cure a bad status, or grant the immunities it lists. A cursed reading merely says that the player feels ignorant: it does not provide a convincing false report or erase knowledge, and does not automatically identify the type.
Strategy
Read it when deciding whether a protection is active or diagnosing why a tactic is failing. It can reveal a useful distinction between having found an item and actually having its status or immunity in effect. The self-knowledge spell and equipment with a corresponding information effect offer alternatives when available.
For unknown equipment, use identification. For a status that needs immediate removal, use its cure rather than spending the reading action merely confirming it. The report itself is not a guarantee that a protection applies to every attack: displacement and deflection, for example, cover different attack paths.
