A cloak of true sight is a cloak that supplies sustained true sight while worn noncursed. It reveals invisible creatures within sight and defeats certain monster deceptions. Its cursed form, the cloak of blindness, instead blinds the wearer.[1]
Generation
It is a repeatable item-level-3 cloak in random items and monster possessions, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Ordinary copies start at +0 and follow the cloak appearance and blessing rules.[2]
What true sight reveals
Wearing the noncursed cloak grants true sight and identifies its type. The equipment contribution normally remains active while worn; removing it subtracts that contribution from the shared status. Its main interactions are:[3]
| Situation | Result with true sight |
|---|---|
| Invisible creature within line of sight | The creature can be drawn despite its invisibility |
| Monster's surprise attack | Avoids the surprise branch's skipped player turn |
| Blackout special power | Avoids that power's blinding effect; its extinguishing of carried torch light is separate |
| Monster illusion | Reveals the creature's actual name and display character |
This is not full-map monster detection. Equipping the cloak does not clear existing blindness, and these particular checks do not establish immunity to every source of blindness or every gaze.[4]
A cursed cloak adds sustained blindness instead. It does not erase true sight obtained elsewhere, but having that other status does not stop this equip effect from adding blindness. Removing the cursed contribution requires resolving the ordinary stuck-equipment problem; the cloak's name changes to cloak of blindness when its state is known.[5]
Strategy
True sight is valuable when an invisible enemy is hard to locate or surprise attacks are disrupting your turns. It makes vampire lords easier to see, but does not supply the negative-energy immunity needed for their life-draining touch. The two cloaks compete for one slot, so obtain one of those protections elsewhere when preparing to fight such enemies.
The scroll of true sight is another source of the status when the cloak slot is needed for something else. More enchantment or stronger positive blessing does not sharpen the cloak's vision further. Check curse state before putting it on: an unidentified cloak can replace a visibility problem with sustained blindness.
