A quail is a small flying bird, displayed as a brown q. It normally starts peaceful and has no tactical attacks, even if it later becomes hostile. Its remains are named quail en brochet.[2]
Generation
Quail belong to the ordinary random pools and are explicitly listed in plains, forest and river encounters. They have no ordinary starting possessions. Talking to a ban sidhe can also summon a quail: the first screaming conversation attempts to place a hostile bird on an empty adjacent floor square, then changes the speaker's subsequent conversation.[3]
Behavior and remains
A hostile quail can flutter toward the player, including across water, but its empty combat sequence gives it no attacks or blocks. It has no ranged or special ability. Its defense score of 15 can make it harder to hit than its three HP suggest; that defense is not damage absorption.[4]
Quail en brochet appears on 50% of normal deaths. It supplies six food-reserve points when eaten, with one point consumed by a normal hourly hunger check. It has no alchemical transformation. A quail is not initially hungry and does not accept a ration as a taming meal.[5]
Strategy
A quail cannot retaliate with an ordinary tactical attack, making it less dangerous prey than a hawk. Its high defense may still waste time, and killing it may leave no meal. Do not confuse the hostile quail summoned by a ban sidhe with the threat posed by the summoner itself: the bird's lack of attacks does not remove the ban sidhe's abilities.
