A jub-jub bird is a hungry, hostile flying creature, displayed as a purple j. It has two high attacks, poison immunity and edible remains called jube-jubes.[2]

Generation

Jub-jub birds belong to ordinary random-monster pools. They are not separately favored by the named countryside terrain tables, but may occur through those tables' random slots. An ordinary bird has no starting possessions.[3]

Behavior and feeding

The bird flutters toward the player, crosses water and hedges by flying, and attempts two high physical attacks with raw rolls of 0–24. It has no block, ranged attack or special ability. Its burbling conversation is only a response, not a spell or food transaction.[4]

While hungry, it accepts ordinary food and becomes peaceful. Give requires an adjacent target and a non-cursed item. Poisonous food fails as an attack: the bird's poison immunity prevents the 100 poison damage, but it still consumes the offering, loses hunger, remains hostile and shifts your alignment two points toward Chaos. That also removes reliance on a second ordinary feeding response.[5]

Jube-jubes have a 50% chance to appear on normal death. They are ordinary edible remains, providing six points of food reserve, not poison resistance or a special magical effect. They have no alchemical transformation.[6]

Strategy

An ordinary meal is a useful way to end a fight with a still-hungry bird; poison food wastes that opportunity. If fighting is necessary, its high-directed attacks help when planning a defensive sequence, but neither a pond nor a hedge isolates it. Do not assume that eating a poison-immune creature grants the same immunity: these remains are only food.

Origin

The Jubjub bird appears in Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky. Omega hyphenates the name and gives this creature a burbling response, another word from the poem.[7]
