A phantasticon is a hostile monster that disguises its name and symbol as another creature. The disguise does not give it the copied creature's statistics or attacks.[2]
Generation
Phantasticons are ordinary random-monster candidates. No countryside terrain table specifically favors them, and ordinary construction gives them no starting possessions.[3]
Illusion and combat
Its normal appearance is a red p. On an eligible nearby special action, it has a one-fifth chance to copy another monster's display name and symbol, excluding the three dynamically populated NPC templates. Only appearance changes: its underlying identity, 10 HP and ordinary physical attacks remain those of a phantasticon. With true sight active, a special action restores its normal appearance.[4]
It makes two attacks per sequence with raw physical rolls of 0–9, and has one defensive action. It is immune to sleep. Although its remains are poisonous, its melee routine has no poison rider. It is not initially hungry, so ordinary feeding does not pacify it.[5]
Remains
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave phantasticon's eyes. These are poisonous food, but Ambrosias can transform them into a blessed scroll of true sight for 20 Au. One sells for 3 Au. Transformation replaces the selected stack with one scroll.[6]
Strategy
Treat an unexplained change of name or glyph cautiously, but do not assume the new appearance also changes the enemy's power. True sight helps resolve the disguise. A confirmed phantasticon is fragile and has no innate resistance to ordinary physical damage, while sleep is ineffective. Keep its eyes for alchemy rather than eating them in the hope of gaining true sight directly.
