A torpor beast is a slow, hungry predator whose melee attack can induce sleep. Its valium gland has opposite practical uses: eating it induces sleep, while alchemy produces a potion of alertness.[2]
Generation
Torpor beasts belong to ordinary random-monster pools. They are initially hostile and carry no ordinary possessions.[3]
Sleep attack
The beast makes one physical middle attack for a raw 0–9 damage, with one middle defense. Each successful hit has a 40% chance to attempt sleep. Without sleep immunity, and provided you are not already asleep, this adds two through nine sleep counts. These normally expire at game-minute status checks; you cannot take ordinary actions while asleep. Further hits do not extend the existing sleep through this routine.[4]
The sleep check follows the damage call, so armor or displacement does not by itself stop it. The beast is immune to fear and sleep, but has no other innate immunity. Safe food pacifies a hungry specimen.[5]
Valium gland
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave a valium gland. Eating it attempts a longer sleep, two through thirteen counts, without providing food. Ambrosias buys it for 16 Au or charges 100 Au to turn the selected stack into one blessed +4 potion of alertness. Alertness helps against surprise; it does not itself supply sleep immunity.[6]
Strategy
Its low damage and slow interval can hide the danger of losing several minutes of actions near other enemies. Feed it or attack without accepting repeated melee hits when sleep immunity is unavailable. Casting sleep on the beast is ineffective.
Keep the gland for conversion when alertness is useful. Neither eating it nor drinking the resulting alertness potion is a substitute for sleep immunity against another torpor beast.
