A wyvern is a flying predator with two poisonous melee attacks. It is distinct from the much tougher king wyvern, whose sting has a higher poisoning chance but whose remains are not poisonous food.[2]
Generation
Wyverns belong to ordinary random-monster pools. Ordinary construction gives no fixed item and zero or one random possession.[3]
Poison and gifts
It makes two physical attacks for a raw 0–19 damage each, with two defenses. Each successful hit has a 50% chance to add twenty poison counts unless you have poison immunity. Poison normally deals three damage and consumes one count at each game-minute status check; further successful applications add to the counter. Preventing a hit's direct damage through armor or displacement does not cancel its separate poison check.[4]
The wyvern itself is immune to fire, not poison. It has no ranged attack. Its greedy response accepts a single gift worth at least 500 Au to remove hostility; it has no hungry feeding response. Flight permits crossing water.[5]
Sting
Normal death drops possessions and has a 50% chance to leave a wyvern's sting. Eating it causes poisoning. Ambrosias buys the sting for 50 Au or charges 300 Au to turn the selected stack into one blessed +5 ring of poison resistance. Wearing that noncursed ring grants poison immunity and clears existing poisoning; its +5 does not strengthen the immunity.[6]
Strategy
Have poison protection or a way to neutralize poison before prolonged melee. Fire attacks fail, while poison attacks can affect this particular wyvern despite its own poisonous sting. Its lack of ranged attacks favors attacking from a position that actually keeps it away; water alone does not do so.
The sting can become protection against later poison creatures. Do not eat it as a route to that immunity: the beneficial effect belongs to the converted ring.
