A lava worm is a fire attacker that can change the terrain beneath it. An encounter can leave lava behind even after the creature itself has been killed.[2]
Generation
Lava worms belong to ordinary random-monster pools and a dedicated volcano selection. They are initially hostile and carry no ordinary possessions.[3]
Fire and terrain
The worm makes one attack for a raw 0–59 fire damage. It has no defensive action or ranged attack. It is immune to fire, but not poison, cold or sleep. Its swimming status allows it to enter water; it is not a flying creature.[4]
On half of its special-action calls, it changes its current square: ordinary floor becomes lava, while water becomes ordinary floor. Other terrain remains unchanged. The action does not require hostility, though the usual awake and nearby special-action checks still apply. It is not a guaranteed lava trail on every movement, and killing the worm does not reverse already changed terrain.[5]
Remains and strategy
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave a dead lava worm. The heavy corpse is poisonous food and has no alchemical transformation. The worm has no hungry or greedy pacification response.[6]
Fire immunity addresses the direct melee attack. Without it, use its slow interval and lack of ranged attacks to avoid contact; sleep and non-fire damage are not blocked by its innate immunity. Check the actual terrain before following its path or stepping onto the square where it died. Removing the enemy does not make a newly created lava square safe.
The corpse offers neither useful alchemy nor safe nutrition, so its substantial weight is usually a burden rather than a reward.
