An illusory fiend is a physically real attacker whose displayed name and symbol can imitate other monsters. The illusion does not make its attacks harmless or give it the copied creature's abilities.[2]
Generation
Illusory fiends belong to ordinary random-monster pools. Ordinary construction gives no fixed item and zero through two random possessions.[3]
Appearance and combat
On each applicable special-action call without true sight, the fiend has a one-in-five chance to change its displayed name and symbol to another non-NPC template. Its identity and combat statistics stay those of an illusory fiend. True sight restores its actual display through this ability. The illusion check does not independently require hostility, so a peaceful fiend can still change its appearance.[4]
It makes three physical attacks, each with a raw 0–29 damage roll, and has no defensive action or ranged attack. Its only innate immunity is magic damage; it is not immune to ordinary physical damage or the three elements, and it is not intangible.[5]
The fiend is greedy. A single gift worth at least 700 Au, including cash, removes hostility. Smaller gifts are not accumulated toward that threshold. It has no separate hungry feeding response.[6]
Remains and strategy
Normal death drops possessions and has a 50% chance to leave zero-weight remains named not much of anything. Zero weight does not prevent their creation. They are inedible and have no alchemical transformation.[7]
Track the real encounter through changes in appearance. True sight helps identification, but ordinary weapons and elemental attacks are already capable of damaging the fiend. Its magic-damage immunity is not universal immunity to every spell effect. A qualifying gift is an alternative to fighting its 100 HP and three attacks, though visual changes can continue afterward.
