An automatum major is a heavily defended robot with physical attacks, ball lightning and a poisonous cloud. It is a stronger relative of the automatum minor, and an ordinary specimen carries a lightsabre.[2]
Generation
Automata major appear in ordinary random encounters. A normal specimen begins with a neutral +0 lightsabre, initially unidentified, and no extra random possessions. The fixed Arena sequence places one after the lich and before the jabberwock.[3]
| Form | HP | Hit | Raw attack damage | Fixed lightsabre |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary | 500 | 30 | 0–99 | Yes |
| Arena | 580 | 60 | 0–149 | No |
The Arena constructor does not create ordinary carried items. Its named opponent leaves remains on normal death; ordinary specimens do so half the time.[4]
Description
The automatum makes two physical attacks and has two defenses. Its carried lightsabre does not supply the player's lightsabre attack effect to those blows. It can open doors, but cannot fly or pass through walls.[5]
Its ranged ball lightning has a raw damage upper bound matching its attack damage: 100 ordinarily. Normal ranged attacks occur at distances three or four, while the Arena's enhanced awareness allows longer range. It is itself immune to electricity, poison, fear and sleep.[6]
Within two squares, its special action can add seven poison counts. Magical breathing prevents this cloud's poisoning attempt, and poison immunity also prevents the poison. The cloud does not require the automatum to be hostile, so making it peaceful would not by itself make close proximity safe.[7]
Remains and strategy
Its components are inedible and have no alchemical use. The ordinary lightsabre is the important recoverable item: identify it before trying to wield it, since an unidentified lightsabre's self-injury is independent of this monster's attacks.[8]
Electricity and sleep are ineffective against its immunities. Poison protection or breathing counters the cloud, while electrical protection addresses the ball lightning; neither removes the heavy physical blows. The Arena version is tougher and offers no fixed lightsabre reward.
