A rod of summoning creates a random hostile creature beside its user. Blessing the rod does not supply an ally or allow a choice of species; it uses the same unrestricted hostile effect as a scroll of summoning.[1]
Generation
It is an item-level-2 random wand, normally with 1–20 charges and random blessing. It can occur in random loot, pawn-shop stock or acquirement.[2]
Ambrosias can transform a frost demon's heart into a blessed +5 rod with 20 charges, normally for 400 Au. This is a use for the remains, not a rod guaranteed in the demon's living inventory. The blessing and enchantment do not tame its summons.[3]
Description
| Property | Rule |
|---|---|
| Selection | Any of the 150 creature templates, without the ordinary difficulty or uniqueness filter |
| Attitude | Forced hostile, regardless of the rod's blessing |
| Position | First empty adjacent floor in the order southeast, northeast, southwest, northwest, east, west, south, north |
| Cost | One charge even if no square is available; no mana |
| Identification | Reveals the type whenever the charged effect runs |
There is no targeting prompt, species choice or temporary-summon timer. Each success uses normal creature construction, including its ordinary possessions and identity-specific behavior. Floor placement does not change the creature's normal movement abilities. The full shared rules and special exceptions are in Summoning.[4]
Strategy
Treat the rod as a source of encounters, not rescue. Even an early rod can produce a late-game creature, and repeated uses fill floor squares immediately beside you. Prepare defenses and an exit before deliberately summoning for experience, loot or alchemical ingredients; a particular reward is not guaranteed.
Neither blessing nor enchantment improves control. The ordinary Summoning spell instead uses the current-difficulty ordinary pool, so the rod is not a mana-free equivalent of that spell. Keep charges for situations where you deliberately accept the wider risk; do not spend a blessing solely to change the summoned creature's attitude.[5]
