A rod of hiding conceals a selected map square as secret terrain, making it display as a wall. It does not grant invisibility to the player and does not replace the square's underlying terrain with a real wall.[1]
Generation
This item-level-1 random wand normally has 1–20 charges, random blessing and +0 enchantment. Random loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement can supply it.[2]
Description
One charge is consumed before targeting and the type is revealed. Every blessing state and enchantment uses the same effect. A valid selected square becomes secret and displays a wall; its creature, objects and terrain function are not removed. There is no monster hit roll and no travelling projectile.[3]
| Interaction | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Ordinary projectile tracing | Treats secret terrain as an obstruction |
| Ordinary monster trying to enter | Usually cannot enter a secret square |
| Smart-moving monster | Can enter; when observed through the relevant sight check, reveals the secret square |
| Intangible monster | Can pass the secret-terrain check |
| Water-only monster | Checks for actual water before the secret-terrain rule |
These are movement and projectile checks, not immunity to every special ability. Directly targeted powers can use different rules. Searching and clairvoyance can reveal secret terrain, so the concealment need not persist.[4]
Unlike several direct-target wands, hiding checks that its coordinates are in bounds. Cancelling its targeting prompt therefore produces no terrain change, but the charge has already been spent.[5]
Strategy
Use a concealed square as a situational obstacle when you know the approaching creature cannot pass secret terrain. Do not treat it as universal confinement: smart movement, intangibility and the earlier water-only test change the result. The apparent wall can also obstruct your own projectile attacks.
For actual personal invisibility, use an appropriate effect such as a potion of invisibility. Hiding an occupied square neither banishes its occupant nor puts it to sleep. A direct attack or special power can still make a visually concealed situation dangerous.
