| Cursed name | Ring of gaze immunity |
A ring of gaze immunity protects against the catoblepas' blinding gaze. It grants the same immunity when cursed, although a cursed ring cannot be removed normally. Gaze immunity is different from true sight and does not cure existing blindness.[1]
Generation
It is an item-level-2 random ring, available in ordinary loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Ordinary enchantment, blessing and appearance are randomized independently of its immunity power.[2]
Ambrosias converts catoblepas' eyes into a blessed +3 ring for 100 Au. Eating the eyes does not substitute for wearing the alchemical product.[3]
Description
Wearing the ring adds one gaze-immunity contribution, and removing it subtracts one. A positive total blocks the gaze check. Enchantment and blessing magnitude do not enter that check, and the worn effect does not automatically identify the type.[4]
| Threat or condition | Protection |
|---|---|
| Catoblepas' blinding gaze | Prevents the gaze from inflicting blindness |
| Already blind | Does not clear the condition |
| Murk-fungus blackout spores | No gaze-immunity protection; true sight is the relevant check |
| Physical attacks | No general damage absorption or defense bonus |
These boundaries matter more than the word gaze in a creature's description. Blindness explains the different causes and remedies.[5]
Strategy
Wear it before entering the catoblepas' gaze range, particularly when blindness would prevent reading an emergency scroll. If already blinded, use a suitable healing or curing effect; equipping this ring does not restore sight. Its niche is prevention of that gaze, while a truesight ring addresses invisible enemies and certain other blinding powers.[6]
One working contribution is sufficient. Duplicates and extra enchantment do not improve the gaze check, so use the remaining ring slots for other needs. A cursed copy still works but commits its slot until its curse is removed.[7]
