| Cursed name | Ring of burden |
A ring of burden increases its own weight from 1 to 1000 while worn. Ordinary copies start cursed, so the added burden cannot normally be undone by simply removing the ring. Making it noncursed allows removal but does not stop its weight effect while it remains equipped.[1]
Generation
It is an item-level-0 random ring, available in ordinary loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Unlike most rings, ordinary construction preserves its template's -1 curse instead of rolling blessing. Enchantment begins at -2 or lower. Its appearance is shuffled with the other rings, not fixed to a visibly heavy design.[2]
Description
| State | Weight | Ordinary removal |
|---|---|---|
| Carried but not worn | 1 | Can be handled normally, even if cursed |
| Worn and cursed | 1000 | Blocked by the curse |
| Worn and noncursed | 1000 | Allowed; the worn effect then restores weight 1 |
Enchantment and blessing magnitude do not modify these weights. Wearing the ring prints a heaviness message but does not set its identification state.[3]
The extra weight counts with the rest of carried equipment and pack contents. Carrying capacity depends on current Strength and Agility; crossing a burden threshold increases the player's action interval. The resulting slowdown is therefore not a fixed number for every character. A mount's later speed override is another reason not to equate the ring's weight with a universal movement penalty.[4]
Strategy
Use identification rather than a wearing test to distinguish an unknown ring. A cursed copy sitting in the pack is inconvenient loot; putting it on makes it a stuck piece of heavy equipment.
For an ordinary -1 curse, an appropriate blessing or self-targeted dispel can make removal possible. The weight remains 1000 until its worn effect is removed. Increasing enchantment does not make the ring lighter, and a strength ring that offsets some burden does not remove this ring's curse.[5]
