A poisoned ration is contaminated food. Eating it adds 5–24 poison counts unless poison immunity prevents the poisoning, and supplies no nourishment. It can also be used against a suitable hungry creature.[1]
Generation and appearance
It is an item-level-1 random food, possible in ordinary loot, pawn-shop stock and noncursed acquirement. Normal copies are unblessed: poisoning is part of the food's identity, not proof that it is cursed.[2]
An unidentified poisoned ration is called food ration. The safe ration instead initially appears as a red and white striped bucket, the food sold at Sonder's. Identify uncertain supplies rather than assuming any item displaying the word ration is safe.[3]
Eating
The poison adds to any existing poisoning. Blessing does not make the ration safe, and cursing does not increase its poison range. Poison immunity blocks the added poison but does not turn it into nourishing food. Unlike ordinary meals, it does not add or subtract a food point.[4]
Feeding an enemy
When given to a hungry non-horse creature with neither greed nor need taking priority, it is eaten and attempts 100 poison damage. The victim's hunger is cleared, but it becomes hostile, and your alignment moves two points toward Chaos. Poison immunity blocks the damage, not those other consequences.[5]
This is immediate monster damage, not the player's 5–24-count poisoning. A horse rejects the ration, and greedy or needy recipients evaluate it as treasure first. The ordinary Give command refuses cursed items, so an otherwise identical cursed poisoned ration is less convenient to deliver.[6]
Strategy
Keep a poisoned ration separate from emergency meals. For a vulnerable hungry enemy, its poison can be useful, but an ordinary safe meal may end hostility without a fight or the alignment penalty. Confirm the recipient's needs and immunity before spending a heavy ration on the attack; it is not a universal poison projectile.
