A szechuan pepper is a special food which grants sleep immunity after dealing one point of unstoppable damage. It does not increase your food reserve, despite being eaten.[1]
Generation
Peppers are item-level-2 random food, possible in ordinary loot and pawn-shop stock, and available through noncursed acquirement. A blessed acquisition lets you choose the type. Ordinary copies are unblessed; their recognizable appearance is fixed rather than shuffled each game.[2]
Description
Eating the pepper produces increasingly emphatic heat messages, inflicts one damage and then adds a sleep-immunity contribution. Ordinary armor and fire resistance do not absorb this damage: it is not fire damage. At one HP, the damage can kill you before you receive the immunity.[3]
Blessing and cursing do not change the result. The immunity has no timer attached by the pepper; repeated peppers add further contributions rather than a timed duration. Immunity blocks ordinary sleep applications, but this is distinct from alertness and does not supply that potion's searching benefit.[4]
An ordinary hungry creature does not accept the pepper through the usual food response. Its special eating effect is not ordinary nourishment or poison food.[5]
Strategy
Eat a known pepper while healthy and safe to establish protection before facing sleep attacks. One surviving meal is enough to make a previously unprotected character immune to ordinary sleep; further peppers usually offer less immediate value. A starving character still needs real nourishment, and a critically injured character should heal before paying the one-HP cost.
