A bucket of salt water destroys a trifid automatically when it catches you, preventing the encounter's first damage and granting 1,000 experience. It is a heavy but effective preparation for living hedges.[1]
Generation
Salt water is an item-level-0 random miscellaneous item. It can appear in pawn-shop stock or be obtained through acquirement. Its appearance already states its name, although appearance alone does not set its formal identification state.[2]
Description
Carry the bucket into the trifid encounter. The response is automatic: one bucket is consumed, the trifid becomes ordinary floor, and you gain the experience. Accessible inventory and the backpack are searched, and only one bucket is removed from a stack. Separate activation does nothing; blessing, enchantment and identification do not change the protection.[3]
Salt water does not solve the Earth Station ordeal. That encounter explicitly notices the bucket and rejects it as ineffective; it is not the trifid interaction. Ordinary thorny hedges also use a different encounter.[4]
Strategy
Bring a bucket before deliberately contacting a trifid, such as those in the hedge maze. At weight 100 each, a large supply is expensive in carrying capacity. The backpack is sufficient; there is no need to reserve a hand or ready slot. Keep the distinction between a trifid and an ordinary hedge in mind, since salt water is not general protection against vegetation.
