A disintegration-trap component creates a disintegration trap. Its powerful rune appearance is shared with teleport and manadrain components, making unknown activation particularly dangerous.[1]
Generation
It is an item-level-0 random miscellaneous item, possible pawn-shop stock, and an acquirement choice. Disarming a disintegration trap can yield an identified component, subject to the separate recovery check.[2]
Setting and effect
Activate an identified component on ordinary, effect-free floor to set a hidden trap. One component is consumed, even on invalid placement. An unknown component on valid floor instead invokes the trap on you.[3]
The trap deals 100 unstoppable damage to a triggering monster; this is not automatic death for a creature with more HP. A player instead loses the cloak in the cloak slot, or body armor if no cloak is present, or takes 250 unstoppable damage if both slots are empty. A mount is destroyed before this player effect, so riding is not protection.[4]
Strategy
The fixed damage is powerful against grounded enemies, but it does not bypass the flight and intangibility trigger restrictions. Keep your own route clear of the trap and identify the rune before use. A cheap cloak can absorb a player hit at the cost of that cloak, but this is a fallback, not a reason to repeatedly cross a disintegration trap. The rod applies the related effect at range without requiring an enemy to step on a prepared square.
