An abyss-trap component is a dark fabric patch used to set an abyss trap. It can remove a grounded monster from play, but is exceptionally dangerous to its owner.[1]

Generation

It can occur as item-level-0 random miscellaneous loot, pawn-shop stock, or through acquirement. A still-concealed abyss trap can be found by searching and then disarmed for a chance at an identified component. A revealed abyss symbol is not accepted by the ordinary disarm command until the square is shown as a trap again.[2]

Setting and effect

An identified component activated on ordinary, effect-free floor installs a hidden trap and is consumed. Invalid placement also consumes it, while an unknown copy on valid floor causes an accident instead.[3]

A triggering grounded, tangible monster vanishes rather than dying normally: you receive no kill experience or normal death loot. If the event is in sight, its square also becomes an open abyss. A player faces a Dexterity-plus-level avoidance check; riding forces an abyss entry before that check. Inside the current dungeon, falling can cause damage, deeper travel or a lethal encounter; outside it, the abyss attempts random countryside teleportation, subject to the Astral Plane and Circle demesne restriction.[4]

Strategy

Use disappearance only when removing the opponent matters more than its experience, possessions or death-triggered quest progress. It is not a substitute for killing a quest target. Allow yourself a route away from the trap, and never trial-activate an unknown patch. After a monster exposes an open abyss, avoid treating that square as harmless floor or an ordinary recoverable component.
