A manadrain-trap component sets a mana-drain trap. It shares the powerful rune appearance with teleport and disintegration components. Against monsters it disables one particular form of spellcasting; against the player it drains mana and can expire temporary enhancements.[1]

Generation

It is an item-level-0 random miscellaneous item, possible pawn-shop stock, and an acquirement result. Disarming a mana-drain trap can recover an identified component through the separate recovery check.[2]

Setting and effect

Activate an identified component on ordinary, effect-free floor to install a hidden trap. One copy is consumed. Invalid placement wastes it; unknown use on valid floor causes an accident.[3]

For a triggering monster, the trap removes the ordinary spellcasting special ability. It does not remove other special powers that happen to call spells, and deals no direct damage. Flying and intangible creatures bypass it.[4]

For a player with nonzero mana, the trap sets mana to zero and applies the adverse dispelling effect to eligible temporary enhancements. At exactly zero mana, each trigger instead has a 10% chance to overload the trap, remove it, and refill mana to the normal calculated amount. The other 90% leaves the trap and mana unchanged.[5]

Strategy

An identified trap can be used as a risky preparation for a mana refill: arrive with exactly zero mana and repeat triggers until it overloads. The number of attempts is unbounded, enemies can act while you spend time, and entering with mana first strips eligible enhancements. Do not attempt the trick with an unidentified rune, which may be a disintegration component. Against enemies, check the actual special ability rather than assuming every magical attack will be disabled.
